The ground-breaking comedy show being aired by Iranian television each night at 20:00 is bringing critics to the surface again and proving that they weren’t too wrong after all.
Mehran Modiri and his crew have been producing some real sweet comedy over there years and been doing pretty good. The got so popular not long before they aired their first episode of the comedy series around March 1993. In fact they were breaking the taboo of making people laugh on the air as it was forbidden in the so called Islamic republic of Iran. After the Islamic revolution of 1979, Iranian broadcasters tend to stick to their hidden agenda of making people wretched and miserable taking any opportunity to suppress anything that may shine in peoples life.
Anyway, they (Mehran Modiri) got banned and forbidden from producing any TV series, in fact TV broadcasters faced the fear of being closed down if they aired any episode, series or documentary featuring the so called “Distinguished” group of actors and actresses. Anyway, long story short, years rolled on and as with anything else in Iran, bribes made their way through to officials and the group gained the permission to start producing.
Their latest production that is being aired from around October 2005 has been putting Iran on halt around 20:00 on weekdays. No other show produced in the past three decades is comparable with “Shabhayeh Barareh” (Barareh Nights) due to its extreme sarcasm and political flavor. The series focuses on the society and political issues. Even though it is beating about the bush a bit but the patterns of the series mimicked from “Animal Farm” suggests that it is actually getting somewhere.
It is just the waiting game now. Let’s wait and see if they get anywhere with what they are cooking. Although it is comedy surprisingly many ordinary citizens are waking up to the surrounding facts of everyday life in Iran thanks to “Shabhayeh Barareh”.
